Northeast Wisconsin was home to many of these heroes who never made it back home, and today we want to recognize a few of them and their stories. A native of Lena, Corporal Everett Doney served in the Wisconsin National Guard and then in the U.S. Army during WWI. Doney made the ultimate sacrifice in action during WWI, and is laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Oconto. A native of Green Bay, PFC Bernard Van Der Steen served in the U.S. Army during WWII where his unit saw heavy combat. After providing critical support to American forces he was killed in action and laid to rest in the Netherlands. He has since been awarded the Purple Heart. Link to image A native of New Holstein, Corporal Charles Olson and his Regiment saw some of the heaviest fighting of the Korean War. Corporal Olson was killed in action and laid to rest in Elm Grove Cemetery in Pulaski. He has since received 8 medals and awards for his service. Corporal Farvour was killed in action while fearlessly serving, and is laid to rest in Fort Howard Memorial Park. He has since received 3 medals and awards for his service. Sergeant Mueller was a veteran of three combat deployments and was killed in a helicopter crash while conducting operations in Afghanistan. He has since received 5 awards and medals for his service.
