Rae's brother was killed and her paternal grandmother sacrificed herself to help Rae and her mother Dina escape. Rae and Dina joined partisans armed against the Nazis, then found shelter in a displaced persons camp in Italy before immigrating to the United States in 1947. Today, Rae volunteers with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's visitor services, welcoming and guiding museum visitors and sharing her own story.
